Hoey, Hebert, Brecheen, Taylor Academy Cemetery, Yahoo groups search, and citations on Ancestry
There are recent posts to the Louisiana Genealogy Blog forum and a stray post in my old Geocities guestbook that researchers may be interested in viewing. I've since changed my Geocities guestbook to My Heritage due to Geocities impending closure. I have also moved the Geocities site to WEBNG. If you sign up using my referral, I get more webspace - not that I need it :) ... but in case some of you are looking for free webspace - dareyago- dareitis.
In my mailbag today.
RootsWeb mailing list posts from Webster parish regarding Taylor Cemetery or possibly aka Taylor Academy Cemetery near Cullen, Louisiana. I could not find the USGenWeb cemetery listing for this cemetery that was referenced in the Ancestry post. I did find the cemetery listing with 13 internments on Find A Grave. I suppose two more internments should be listed now.
Has anyone ever heard of Hoeyville Plantation? Well, there was a post about Hoeyville, too, today. You can read more here. There is a plethora of information that this researcher has compliled that included information from Tulane and the NOPL oral history archives. Personally, I had never heard of Hoeyville Plantatation, but I don't know everything either! It is lovely to learn more about Louisiana.
Another researcher is looking for more information about Gedeon Aucoin and Emelie Naquin families in Terrebonne Parish.
What topped off my morning was reading The Ancestry Insider who had a very enlightening post concerning citations on Ancestry, "Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy, 1718-1820". We share this opinion, "I find Ancestry.com's practice of renaming databases to be troublesome."
From the Yahoo Groups blog:
Message Search
"While we know that many of you are disappointed that this week’s maintenance did not include a fix to the message search issue, we are happy to report that we will be pushing out a fix to ALL groups in the next month that should resolve this problem. Currently groups that are affected by this bug are not returning search results altogether, or, may not be returning complete results. If your group meets these criteria, please register your group here : http://surveylink.yahoo.com/wix/p6290938.aspx and it will be one of the first groups migrated over to the new Message Search next month."
I've registered the group - twice , FYI, The search feature will likely be down for awhile.

Over the statue of Liberty with an F16 escort?... Excuse my expletive..., "WHOLELEEE CRAP!" All for a Presidential photo shoot?????!!!!! WHAT?! IDIOCY!?! [GET OUT OF MY AIRSPACE!]

New link, Old links, Geocities closing, and key words in Louisiana genealogy
See also Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
Yourfamily.com offers message boards. I visited them this morning and added a link under Louisiana Genealogy Links.. These links are all searchable through the Google Search feature. I hope I haven't duplicated it! (There are way too many here for me to keep a tally. If you find a bad link here, please email me! ) In fact, there are recent messages for Louisiana on Yourfamily.com.
Geocities posted an announcement that they would be closing their web services. I found out through a Twitter! You wouldn't know of the closure unless you had a Geocities site. The closure of Geocities was only available above your Geocities site file manager! MSN groups posted their closure message in much the same way. IMHO it is a bit deceptive of them. Yahoo claims that you can still buy webspace on Yahoo Geocities, but has no further information about how your newly purchased site will be affected. Did I understand this correctly? Maybe not. You be the judge.[UPDATE: Yahoo announced October 26, 2009 as the day all free GeoCities sites will be deleted. I didn't get an email from Yahoo until JULY concerning the closure of GeoCities.]
This is the second such closure of online services as MSN shut down its groups in February of this year. Is this a trend? There are so many genealogy sites available on Geocities I do not want to contemplate the potential loss of genealogy information and services... AGAIN. Hopefully, the Geocities webmasters will check into their websites and view the closure notice before they are affected. There were no email notices in my Yahoo Inbox, either.
I've added a counter to the blog that also tracks key words, which is interesting. Most visitors do not stay long (90%), but 10% stay for at least 20-30 minutes. Of that 10%, 40 were returning visitors. Here are the results from the key word analysis that give a little insight into what visitors are searching for on the Louisiana Genealogy Blog. I only wish I had the time to research everything queried!

C. T. Howard, Metaire Cemetery and Metarie Jockey Club
The New York Times, "A Noted Lottery Man Dead: Career of Charles T. Howard, of the Louisiana Company", June 1, 1885
"On March 19th, 1861, a call was made by Confederate Secretary of War, Leroy Walker for 1,700 volunteers to garrison forts inside the Confederacy. The Louisiana Legislature allowed Governor Moore to transfer State troops to Confederate service and permitted Louisiana citizens to volunteer for Confederate service. On April 8th, 1861, President Jefferson Davis asked Louisiana for 3,000 additional troops and after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, asked for 5,000 more.New Orleans was the place designated to receive the volunteers. The Metairie Race Course (located where Metairie Cemetery now stands) was used as the military camp and by early May, 1861, some 3,000 troops had trained there. The training camp, called Camp Walker, was deficient in many ways. The lack of easy access to clean drinking water, the swarms of mosquitoes from surrounding swamps and the soft, marshy soil in the camp made the place intolerable to men." Camp Moore, No. 1223 - accessed April 22, 2009
" Metairie Cemetery is located on a high section of ground known as the Metairie Ridge. The Ridge followed the course of Bayou Metairie, which is roughly the path of modern-day Metairie Road. Because Metairie Ridge was high ground (a rare commodity in the below-sea level metro area), in 1838 investors decided that along Bayou Metairie would make a good track for horse racing, and the Metairie Race Course was formed. As New Orleans grew in stature as a port city, the status of the race track grew as well, attracting better horses, gamblers with more money, even US Presidents. The Civil War put a damper on horse racing in the south, and the race track became a Confederate army camp. After the war, an attempt was made to revive the race track, but the sour economy of the Reconstruction help make this attempt a failure. The land was purchased in 1872 by a group of investors who formed the Metairie Cemetery Association, who decided to convert it into its current use." VNO: Metairie Cemetery

The Race and Louisiana Surnames - Louisiana Researchers
The ever growing list of genealogy in Louisiana may possibly be headed for page 3 very soon. Is it a race? I've tried posting the list to Blogger a few times today, but it just won't GO. So sorry to hear about those Florida horses, today.
Upon searching The New York Times Archives, I found an article about horse racing in Louisiana. I know nothing of horse racing. I didn't realize that even in 1854 people gambled and placed bets. I make small bets while playing cards, but I don't bet in on the horses. A few of the ole timers that I used to associate with (have since passed) liked betting on the horses. Rarely, do I gamble these days. I have a friend that I just absolutely REFUSE to bet with as he is a welsher, even on my small $5.00 bets! Nevermind, he's lost the past three out of four super bowls, either.

http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9B07E5DC153DE334BC4B52DFB266838F649FDE
From the New Orleans Picayune April 6
First Day - Although the weather was delightful yesterday, and the track in good order, still the attendance at the race over the Metairie Course was meagre. The race was for a Jockey Club purse of $1,000, three-mile heats, and the entries were Little Flea and Blonde. It being the general opinion among racing people, when the entries were known, that there was suck a disparity between the power and speek of the contestants, that but little sport would ensue, that comparitively few went to the course. So far as the estimate of the great speed of Blonde was concerned, the opinion was well founded, but few persons expected that Little flea could run such a race as they witnessed. Blonde is a large, fine-looking, slashing filly, with an immense stride, and requires a strong rider to hold her steady. Little Flea is, on the contrary, as his name indicates, a diminutive specimen of a race-horses is compactly built, has good action and much speed for his size, being in looks and action very like Mariner, who was formerly in Mr. Bibbon's stable with Fashion. Blonde was of course the favorite before the start, at the odds of four to one; but little money changed hands, as it was thought to be almost a sure thing, barring an accident. The betting-men were therefore generally forced to amuse themselves by betting on time.
Flea jumped off with the lead in the first heat, but Blonde collared him on the first turn, and they ran locked for more than half a mile. Blonde continued to lead the remainder of the distance, Flea once brushing up to her for a moment, but Blonde shook him off and won the heat by four lengths with case, in 5:30 1/2, having been under a strong but unsteady pull the whole distance.
Much as the spectators were astonished at the excellent performance and fast time made by Flea, at the same time their confidence in Blonde increased, as she had as yet made but little exertion; the betting therefore was very slight and unaltered. IN the second heat, Blonde led the entire distance, being only momentarily lapped int he first mile, and won handily at almost a gallop, in the extraordinary fast time of 5:34! Little Flea holding up just inside of the distance stand.
We have not a complete "Racing Calendar" at hand, but if our memory serves us right, this time has seldom, if ever, been beaten.

Virtual Louisiana Research in South Cali!
From their website:
The Virtual Surname Wall provides a worry-free way to post information about your ancestors online and find others who are researching your families.
As a participant, you would list general information, including surname, geography and time frame. Our submission software limits each entry to a maximum of 10 family names, BUT you can submit as many times as you want as often as you like. If space becomes an issue in the future, we may place restrictions on data quantity. Surname Wall information will be maintained by SCGS and included in a searchable online database that will be accessible to the public at no cost on the SCGS website. SCGS cannot be responsible for incorrect or outdated contact information.
Your identifying information will not be displayed. Should we receive an inquiry regarding a possible family connection, SCGS will forward the requestor’s contact information to you. Alternately, you can authorize SCGS to release either your email address or complete contact information.
There is no charge for this service, and the offer is open to the public. We encourage you to extend this invitation to your cousins, genealogy e-mail lists, other society members, and your family history genealogy acquaintances.

Algiers Historical Society and Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans
| From the West Bank Genealogical Society Yahoo Group: The April meeting of the GRSNO will be held on Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Whitney National Bank, Metairie Branch, 1441 Metairie Rd., at 7:30 PM. Colleen Fitzpatrick will be the guest speaker. Her topic is "A Different Kind of DNA Talk." Colleen Fitzpatrick, PhD, is the Consulting Genealogist for the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory. She has been recognized in print media and on MSNBC for her work on the crash of Northwest Flight 4422. She was a key member of the team who identified the remains of the Unknown Child of the Titanic. She is the author of three bestselling books on genealogy, and an award-winning author and columnist who writes for major genealogical publications. The meeting room is entered from the parking lot off Codifer St. which provides a lighted safe area for parking. Light refreshments are provided. Also this from the Algiers Historical Society First of all, here's a reminder that this month's meeting is Saturday at 10am at the Carriage House behind the Courthouse, 225 Morgan. Mark Cave, librarian at the Williams Research Center (Historic New Orleans Collection), will give a presentation on Algiers jazz legend, band leader and music teacher, Manuel Manetta. It's going to be a great one, and there will be music, coffee and cookies. And it's free! Plus, we've got great news about the oral history project. Warren, Roz and Chad at Old Point Bar have donated $200 to the project, adding to the $600 Dr. Gizelle Richard donated to kick it off. If you need a beer or some dental work, please consider showing your thanks by patronizing these Algiers businesses! If you haven't heard, Algiers Historical Society (AHS) is launching an oral history project in which we will record the stories of Algerines. The edited recordings will be made available online and via CD, with copies given to local libraries, schools and other archiv es. They will also be used to create an audio walking tour of Old Algiers, accessible via cell phone or through downloads, and marketed to locals and visitors. The idea is to bring the streets of Algiers alive with voices and music once more, and to give a gift to current and former residents, a lasting record of Algiers' history. We believe it will also be of interest to visitors from across New Orleans and all over the world, especially since jazz is a core part of the story. If you would like to make a contribution, which will be used to secure the necessary equipment and technical support, that would be wonderful! Checks payable to Algiers Historical Society can be mailed to 335 Pelican Avenue, 70114. I hope to see you on Saturday! Group issues - Louisiana Genealogy Blogs
I have not been able to go to the Yahoo Group online to post messages. Message do post via email and I have noticed can be posted through my Google Reader, but not from the group itself. Yahoo searching of the group has been disabled since mid March and was slated for resolution March 31st 2009 per the Yahoo Blog. Not the case..... there is no timeline for resolution.

'Cultural traditions' by Bruce Nolan
"It was 8:30 a.m. and the pigeons were wheeling sharply over St. Mary's Assumption Church when the school bus braked to a stop on Constance Street. Fifty or so pilgrims in comfortable walking shoes disembarked to begin yet again one of New Orleans' enduring cultural and religious traditions: walking to nine churches on Good Friday..."
"...Their story is common, told by Toby Wattigney, the organizer and keeper of the modern tradition. In 1943 his grandmother, Eva, began "making nine churches" each Good Friday, praying especially that her three boys at war in the Pacific would return home safely..." URL

CCPP Vol. 1 No. 4 by Damon Veach
(I have a few missing relatives in Mississippi, too. We are neighbors after all!)
Mr Veach states that querys are published free.
From Claitors
Louisiana Ancestors column format is the oldest of its kind in the United States, and it is now available by way of the Internet. If you are interested in continuing reading and enjoying these column formats, you need to know that it is now a part of Claitor’s Publishing Division’s outstanding collection of publications (http://www.claitors.com). Queries are published free and can be any length but should have a Louisiana connection by heritage or by a state resident working on lines in other areas. Books, society publications/newsletters, dated notices, and other data of importance will be reviewed if copies are submitted with each request. All materials are then donated to the Veach-Foshee Memorial Library Collection in Mansfield, Louisiana, where all the material will be available for research. It is one of the largest genealogical collections in the state and is the property of the DeSoto Parish Historical Society and housed in the Mansfield Female College, the oldest college for women west of the Mississippi River. The property is a part of the complex of museums under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State.
All correspondence concerning this can be sent to ancestorslaveach@cox.net.
The snail-mail address is CCPP Ancestors Column, 709 Bungalow Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70802-5337.
This is a special service to genealogical researchers and for promotion of all genealogical and historical societies in the state and in other areas of the country. Volume 1, Number 1 will begin immediately on a weekly basis.

Thank you!, Cyndi Howells
I didn't know that Cyndi's List was on Facebook. Well, we learn something new everyday. There is a site at Cyndi's List exclusively for Louisiana that is well worth a look.
Thanks again to Cyndi for the add.

"Cast Your Eyes Upon A Loyal Population": Lincoln and Louisiana's Free People of Color - May 9, 2009
From NOGDCR Yahoo Group Louisiana Creole Research Association, Inc. (LA Creole); Louisiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission; and Tulane University present seminar on Lincoln and Free Blacks in Louisiana. Event Date: May 9, 2009 As the entire nation observes this bicentennial year anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln, the three organizations above have planned a seminar on a unique yet little known aspect of Lincoln history. In March 1864, two free men of color from New Orleans met with leading abolitionists including William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and William Sumner, while en route to Washington, D.C. In the capitol city, they presented a petition of over 1,000 signatures of free men of color to President Lincoln. Throughout the Civil War, Lincoln and many of the leading abolitionists were aware of the loyal Unionist population of free blacks in Louisiana who had fought valiantly in the Union army. On Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 1:00p.m. - 4:00p.m., a seminar titled "Cast Your Eyes Upon A Loyal Population": Lincoln and Louisiana's Free People of Color in Jones Hall at Tulane University. Four speakers are scheduled to speak, discussing the development of the free black community in New Orleans and their political activism. For more information contact: Jari Honora coincollector400@ yahoo.com. |
