What else can I find on this blog?

Dear Readers,

Louisiana Genealogy Blogs - Help create links to other genealogy blogs in Louisiana! If you have a Louisiana genealogy blog, please send me a link. You can find links to other genealogy blogs from a variety of sources below this blog. There are links to news stories about genealogy in Louisiana (when that Google thing works - tx Google!) and genealogy tags from Word Press, Louisiana posts from Cousin Connect, and posts from the genealogy community at Live Journal. You may also find other networking websites linking here interested in genealogy and a whole slew of other genealogy blogs. Most of the Louisiana Parishes RootsWeb mailing lists are found linked to the left. I have found these to be the most helpful. Maybe, you will, too.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Feel free to post to the forum or the Louisiana Surname - Louisiana Researchers list and if you're feeling rather adventurous, you can join the Yahoo!Group, too. I try to update the surname list on a monthly basis. You can read the entire four and one half pages of the Louisiana Surnames Louisiana Researchers list here. And if that is giving you trouble (it does sometimes), go here.

I would like to encourage other Louisiana genealogy bloggers to copy the profile I created from Blogger. It assists others in finding you in every parish in Louisiana! There are useful social tools like Add This at the bottom of the blog.

Thanks for stopping by!

Out of town TARP bank visits my blog while on the job

From Wikipedia: "In October 2008, Key received some $2.5 billion in TARP funds, which its Chairman boasted would be used in part to grow even larger.[24] "

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, either.

Have you had a chance to read Damon Veach's column, for Jan. 18th yet? Louisiana Family Group Sheets
344 Families have been submitted so far.

Submit Your Family Group Sheet

Supplies a very nice on-line form to submit your family information.

Family Group Sheets Project

30,000 family group sheets to choose from.

The above website also suggested submitting your GEDCOMS to Roots WebWorldConnect. The URL for more information is 404 concerning Turning Gedcoms into Family Group Sheets, BUT Google kept this in cache and found another page that was 404, FGS FAQ.

Q. Can I send in a GEDCOM instead of a family group sheet?
A. It is not feasible for us to accept GEDCOM's due to the problems it creates for the individual FGS Project managers. To accept GEDCOM's, it would mean that each manager would have to own some type of special program that will open a GEDCOM, a special virus program that would scan the GEDCOM for a virus, then a special program to convert the GEDCOM into a FGS. FGS Project state managers are just volunteers, who may or may not have the resources to obtain and/or store such programs, so requiring them to have this would result in the loss of valuable workers for the project.

If you would like to convert your own GEDCOM's into group sheets, (it is free and easy to do) you might consider doing this:

To convert GEDCOM's to group sheets:
Download the free version of Legacy. It is a genealogy program that can be found online at: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ Just click on the link for Standard version download. Fill out the required registration form and follow the directions. Legacy is a well known, reputable program that will allow you to convert your GEDCOM's into text format group sheets (it is really a full featured genealogy program that actually surpasses what FTM can do, and its use is widely endorsed by LDS) that you can then copy & paste into an email. Once you have Legacy set up, it takes only a coule of minutes to generate a group sheet for each desired family. The following directions are given by Allison Saxman of the Alabama FGS Project.

1. Open Legacy and import the GEDCOM file.
2. Click on "Name List" to locate the husband of the FGS that you want to prepare.
3. Once the right family is on the screen, click on "Reports"; then click on the tab that is marked "Family".
4. Under "Index Options" select Style 1; then select the One Column option.
5. Under "Report Options - Include", uncheck everything except "Alternate Given and Surnames" and "Birth & Death Dates On Names"
6. Under the "Sources" tab, click to include source citations (you may or may not want to do this)
7. There are other tabs you can click on to further detail your FGS if you wish.
8. When satisfied with the options you have selected, click on "Close" under Report Options.
9. On the right side of this menu window, click on "text" (default is set at printer/screen) and then "create".
10. Legacy then asks you for a file name and location to save it on your hard drive. Give the file name (something like JohnDoeFGS), then the location (you will need to create a new folder for your group sheets). Choose "Local Disk (C:), then choose the new folder you made for the group sheets.
11. Legacy then asks if you want to view your text file in your viewer. Say yes.
12. Check to make sure that the FGS looks like you want it to look. If you want to add/delete more information, go back to the "Report Options - Include" section of Legacy and make the necessary changes.

Q. I hit the enter key before I was finished and lost all the information I had entered. Do I have to re-enter it all again to continue?
A. No, simply click on your back button/arrow and it will carry you back to the page that contains your information. Simply finish filling out the form and hit enter again. When you hit the enter key, the form is automatically sent to the proper state manager. Each state manager knows to watch for duplicate submissions, and will use the last one that was sent. OR Another solution to the problem of an electronic form being sent before the submitter is ready is to fill out the form offline. You'll find the command "work offline" in the file menu. When you're ready to send the form, you can go back to the command and click again (the check mark will disappear). If you accidentally hit the "enter" key while you're working offline, you'll be told the email address you're sending the form to isn't available, but just click on the button for continuing to work offline.

If you would like to convert your own GEDCOM's into group sheets, (it is free and easy to do) you might consider doing this.

Q. Will you correct my spelling or typing errors?
A. Email the state manager with (state name) FGS Correction in the subject line and what you would like changed on the group sheet in the body of the email.

Q. I have new information I would like to put on the group sheet I previously submitted.
A. Email the state manager with (state name) FGS additional info in the subject line and your new information in the body of the email. OR Go to the online FGS that you need to change. In your browser, click "File," "Save as," and save the file
to your hard drive; do not change the file name. Open the file in Notepad and make your changes. Save the file. Copy it into an email with the state, file name and the word correction in the subject line and send it to the state manager.

Q. If I do not know when a person died, can I still place him/her on the sheets?
A.
I am not allowed to place living people's names on the web site. If they were born after 1903 and you do not have proof they are deceased, then do not add them to the group sheet. Just put living instead of their name and leave the rest of their information blank. If you add their name & information, then I will either inform you that your sheet can not be added or I may place "living" in the place of the name and delete all identifying data which was entered including dates and places. Estimate the date of death if you know they are deceased, but do not know the exact date

Q. I have a female head of household that isn't/never married but has children. How do I enter this family?
A If they had children but were not married, in place of the husband's name, put the word None, then fill in the rest of the group sheet normally. If they had a common law husband and children, fill the group sheet out normally but stipulate it by putting (Never married) in front of both the names. If they had children by different men, put (1) or (2) or (3) etc behind each childs name and under the documentation area make a note of (1) child of Jane Doe and Harry Smith, (2) child of Jane Doe and John Brown, etc., or child of Jane Doe and unknown father.

Q. Who owns the FGSs?
A
. The submitter owns the sheets that they submitted. The FGS Project does not own any of the group sheets, and does not give permission for anyone to use them. We simply put them online for the submitter.

Q. If I do not know the name of a child, should I leave the space blank?
A.
Place "unknown" in the name space and enter all data you do know.

Q. Can I send you an attachment with FGSs?
A.
Please do NOT send me attachments. I will not open them.

Q. I don't want to give my name. Will my email address be enough?
A.
No, we must have your name & email address, or name and snail mail address.

Q. I found a bad link or broken image. What do I do?
A.
Email the state manager with (state name) FGS bad link in the subject line, the problem in the body of the email, and I will fix the bad link ASAP.

A few updates from my full mailbag: a-round-tu-it

There were over 300 obit records added or updated to the St. Charles Parish USGenWeb LAGenWeb Archives this week.

I found this Google Alert which was previously unread today. My mailbag is so full, I must apologize. It alerted me to the passing of Sue Eakin, a Louisiana author, on this Louisiana blog, by Lamar White, Jr. in September 2009. Please be sure to visit his blog post for much more information on Louisiana.

1) Answer the question: Do you have a genealogical “superpower”? (i.e., a unique research ability or technique that helps you track down records or assemble conclusions that others can’t?) If so, what is it?

I consider this blog format my superpower. I can go everywhere, read everything, and surf all things pertaining to Louisiana genealogy! Moo ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Seriously, though, I especially like the list of Louisiana Surnames Louisiana Researchers b/c it keeps growing and growing and growing. It is internet powered by Louisianians. If I can't find my relatives, I can go find someone elses and you can too!

2) Tell us about it in a blog post, a comment to this post, a comment to Dean's post, or a comment to this post on Facebook or Twitter.

Ok.

3) If you have a picture of yourself in superpower mode, please show it to us!

Google is the real super power who reigns equally with those who add their surnames to the Louisiana Surnames Louisiana Researchers list.  I Google Louisiana genealogy  all of the time. I love using Google.

Louisiana Surnames Louisiana Researchers Updated

The database and website has been updated to reflect the new surnames that have been added since December 5th or 6th 2009. The group may have to wait awhile until I can update THAT database, too.

If I were related to all those surnames..., we'd have a good time finding a pot big 'enough to cook in!
Whew! That's alot a gumbo! Yah'll come and get it. :)

Blog Stats 2009

Well, I've run the stats from 2009 and here are the results. 50% of those that arrive here read anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour or more. The majority utilize Google Search. Many new arrivals from out of the US surfed in to read, too. What I find the most interesting are the key words people used to find my blog. Key words can help me gear the blog towards my readership. I've highlighted potential future blog subjects in RED. Keep in mind the total visits IS correct, but the drill downs on key words and the pages are for the last 500 visitors.

SNGF on Sunday

I'm a day late with my Saturday Night Genealogy Fun, but here's my post anyway.

What was the best 2009 Genealogy Moment?
1) "What was your best Genealogy Moment during 2009?" This could be a research find, a fabulous trip, a found family treasure, etc. Your choice!

2) Tell us about it in a blog post of your own, a comment to this blog post, or a comment to the Twitter or Facebook status line for this post.

It is a tie between the following two events last year that really made my year!
*I found a 3rd cousin on Facebook who shared my family tree all the way back to the 1600's.
*A genealogy lister shared with me a page from a book citing one of my ancestors immigration to the United States.
