What else can I find on this blog?

Dear Readers,

Louisiana Genealogy Blogs - Help create links to other genealogy blogs in Louisiana! If you have a Louisiana genealogy blog, please send me a link. You can find links to other genealogy blogs from a variety of sources below this blog. There are links to news stories about genealogy in Louisiana (when that Google thing works - tx Google!) and genealogy tags from Word Press, Louisiana posts from Cousin Connect, and posts from the genealogy community at Live Journal. You may also find other networking websites linking here interested in genealogy and a whole slew of other genealogy blogs. Most of the Louisiana Parishes RootsWeb mailing lists are found linked to the left. I have found these to be the most helpful. Maybe, you will, too.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Feel free to post to the forum or the Louisiana Surname - Louisiana Researchers list and if you're feeling rather adventurous, you can join the Yahoo!Group, too. I try to update the surname list on a monthly basis. You can read the entire four and one half pages of the Louisiana Surnames Louisiana Researchers list here. And if that is giving you trouble (it does sometimes), go here.

I would like to encourage other Louisiana genealogy bloggers to copy the profile I created from Blogger. It assists others in finding you in every parish in Louisiana! There are useful social tools like Add This at the bottom of the blog.

Thanks for stopping by!

Memorial Day 2010

Friendship Cemetery - Lowndes County, Columbus, Mississippi

Among the articles I have read today concerning Memorial Day, a few stand out.

Newspaper excerpt: January 1864

"The most noticeable feature of the French cemeteries is the ornamentation of the tombs in the oddest form imaginable. In the season of flowers, these are very much used; but when they are not to be had, you will notice black and white or silver paper cut into wreaths hanging on the tombs. When they are appended to the oven tombs, and become dilapidated by the rains, they look so quaint that it was far from impressive."

Louisiana surname groups on Facebook and more

There are many surname groups on Facebook in Louisiana. If you have friended me on Facebook, you can see the list. The following surnames appear:

SAM
KNOWLES
EARHART
NORMAND
GUIDRY
VUELMANS MUES and COFFERS
FUSELIER de la CLARE
TRAHAN ROBICHEAUX
GOUDEAU
CAVANEAUGH

I have also found a Friends of the St. Charles Library, which was awesome 'cause I love libraries.

The one problem that I have with a group on Facebook is the inability to search discussion posts. A Yahoo Group or a Google Group allows for message searching (when that Yahoo Search message feature works.)

In light of current events i.e. The Oil Spill in the Gulf, I would encourage those of you who have never visited Louisiana or understand the plight of our state's coastal regions to read this article, and when you are finished, join a Louisiana birding group on Facebook. Why? First of all, Louisiana birds are beautiful. Secondly, you may have a few less birds migrating next year and this will affect more than just Louisiana. Moving on....to more genealogy b/c I am ranting.

On my reading list this weekend was the The Robertson Family - Red River Sankofa blog. I enjoyed reading about the cemetery preservation efforts for Hettie Adgers cemetery, complete with photographs and transcriptions. I surfed around further found the site guestbook when noticed a link to a TNG site had been added recently. So I surfed on over.....but was disappointed to find that the site requires the admin to approve you before you view anything. Little did I know that Michael Hait had reviewed this site earlier this week, too. Read his review here about the website, Liberian Repatriates. I am looking forward to learning more about the site.

Louisiana genealogy blog reading enjoyable

I browsed a few Louisiana genealogy blogger's blogs this morning. It was quite enjoyable. A few of my blog listings need to be updated. I stopped in at Family Friends and Neighbors, a St. Charles Parish blog, and had a good time reading inquest material and then on to My Big Fat Family blog and viewed her photos of a family fishing trip in Southwest Louisiana. There were more photos to enjoy in East Carroll Parish . Here, I nearly fell outta my chair. She posted a photo of an old Fire Engine from Providence, Louisiana Fire Company No. 1. A photo circa 1893! The Coffey/Coffee Call blog has much interesting information about a WWII missing person, ........or so they thought.

I noted, too, that I missed a few news articles. One of which were three appointments to the Historical Records Advisory Board from earlier in the month of May.

In my mail bag was a post concerning an arch. dig in Nova Scotia, Treasures of Grand Pre.
"In 1755, the site was the centre of an Acadian village. It is thought that the original parish church stood there. It has long been a site of national significance. After the 1755 Acadian deportation, English settlers, called the New England Planters, moved to the area in 1760. "

Which Live Oak Plantation is which?

EOGN announced the release of photos of Bonnie and Clyde on their 76th death day anniversary from The Portal to Texas History.

Tips to Research Military Ancestors on Memorial Day

Bloggers announced that WorldVitalRecords is offering free access until June to military records.

Surfing my mailbag I ran across a few notes from fellow Louisiana genealogy bloggers concerning Live Oak Plantation and one query concerning the BLACKWELL surname of "Live Oak Plantation". There is one internment noted on FAG at "Live Oaks Plantation" in Iberville Parish, where the Political Graveyard has listed him as: Thomas Withers Chinn US Rep 2nd Dst 1839-1841 who was reinterred to Live Oaks Plantation Cemetery with a cenotaph at Magnolia Cemetery in Baton Rouge, LA. Do you suppose there may be more than one Plantation named Live Oak? Yup. Here is another Live Oak Plantation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in an article from The Advocate. So that places Live Oak Plantations in Iberville Parish, Baton Rouge, Lafourche and East Carroll Parish? Curious isn't it? Now if we could get folks to designate the parish or the city Live Oak Baton Rouge Plantation, Live Oak Iberville Parish Plantation, maybe this search wouldn't be so confusing!

Jewish cemetery, U.S. Grant's Papers, A Freedom Tweet, USGenWeb's New Census Records

It was awful to read about the desecration over the weekend at one of Lousiana's historic Jewish cemeteries. I caught the news today from a Shreveport Times article and a heads up from Tracing the Tribe. NARA will be celebrating the fourth annual Jewish American Heritage Month in a few days with an opening celebration on May 27th. Here is more from DEARMyrtle on the event. (more....if you've read DEARMYRTLE.....here is a link to search U.S. GRANT'S records, if you are interested. You will find the most interesting information in Volume XIX. I found this article on a Twitter Juneteenth Celebration neat, too. h/t URL)

This in from my mail bag:
The Winn Genealogical and Historical Association will hold a meeting Saturday May 22 at 9:30 AM. The purpose of the meeting will be to record 2 small African American cemeteries, so come dressed for work. The group plans to meet in the parking lot of the Health Unit and proceed from there to the first cemetery, Lone Hill. After the work is completed a cook out will be held at the home of Jack Crain.

This should prove to be an exciting and interesting outing so don’t miss it.

The public is invited to attend.

Land Patent October 1860 Adley H Gladden, Brig. Gen. 1st Louisiana Infantry Regmt

The land patent actually uses the spelling Addley H Gladden. All other internet sources that I looked up used the spelling, Adley H. Gladden.

"Adley Hogan Gladden lived in New Orleans after the Mexican war. Gladden moved to New Orleans, Louisiana." [http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=30298]

I'd like to know exactly where Addley Gladden lived. He lived in New Orleans per some records and others just said that Addley Gladden lived in Louisiana. I searched records and this was all I could find: Morehouse parish. He may have "lived" in New Orleans, BUT he owned land in Morehouse parish. 160 acres of land purchased in October 1860.

"In 1861 he took command of the 1st South Carolina Regiment as a lieutenant colonel, and shortly thereafter he was transferred to the 1st Louisiana Regulars and promoted to Colonel." [ http://www.hmbd.org/marker.asp?marker=30298] - Looking up Civil War Reg'ts is no easy task. The term "Regulars" did not appear in any other source, but may be common reference terminology that I am just not familiar with....

He served in the Seminole War, Mexican War and the Civil War. He died April 1862. Some sources say he died after having an arm amputated after being struck by a cannon ball during the Battle of Shiloh. Here is his FAG memorial.

Morehouse Parish was created on 1844 , from Ouachita Parish and the parish was named in honor of early settler Abraham Morehouse . See the link for a map of Morehouse parish in 1860. This is about as far from New Orleans as one could get. Addley H. Gladden had business to conduct, so , of course, he would be living in New Orleans. Addley H. Gladden was a cotton broker. I can't see anyone commuting from Morehouse parish to New Orleans in 1860. Can you?

"When the civil war came, Colonel Gladden, whose home was then in Louisiana, made haste to serve the cause of his beloved South. Going to Pensacola as colonel of the First Louisiana regiment, on September 30, 1861, he was commissioned brigadier-general and assigned to command of a brigade, including the First regiment, of which D. W. Adams then became colonel." - [http://www.civilwarreference.com/people/index.php?peopleID=420, accessed May 2, 2010.]

It looks like he also had a camp set up that was named for him according to USGenWeb LAGenWeb Archives records. http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/state/military/wbts/booths-index/sa-si.txt

I thought that this was an interesting find..... a census taken of all of the slaves who were over 100 yo. Evidently, Morehouse parish was the home of two centenarians who were slaves in 1860. I thought that living to be over 100 was a recent invention due to improvements in medicine and healthcare. Many say that longevity is genetic.
